THE SECOND BIG MISTAKE
How they underestimated me. A crime fighter never gives up until the job is done and the bird has been saved. The next day I called Warner Bros. once more and found out the name of the film company’s chaperone assistant who was looking after John Macher while he stayed in the city. I knew getting this information was a long shot, but I figured I just had to have authority in my voice and take no shit from the corporate bastards. Looking back now, I am quite convinced I could have had the guy from Warner’s sign his life savings over to me—he was that receptive. I used the cunning mind trick of placing the call first thing in the morning, a time when people have just arrived for work and don’t want aggravation from a tosser like me to start their day with. Mornings were always the very best time, I have found, to gain any kind of insider knowledge. The idea was to get in and out before the breakfast coffee has touched their lips.
Having the director’s assistant’s name in my possession now as well, I called the casting director back, disguising my voice as best as possible.
“Lucy, how are you? I just had breakfast with our good friend John Macher, and he accidentally left his jacket in the restaurant, the silly boy that he was. I’m sure he must have a million things on his mind right now. John told me that he was meeting with the casting people today and asked if I could drop it directly off at his hotel as he didn’t need it for the rest of the morning. Silly me hung up before asking John which hotel he was staying at this time around. I don’t want to call him back and bother him again as he’s not in the greatest of moods, so I was wondering if by chance you knew where…”
“Claridges,” the assistant rapidly replied.
“Of course he is, that’s right…his usual haunt. How silly of me.” I thanked her profusely and hung up the receiver, my face beaming with the equalizing goal in our battle of wills.
You naive girl, didn’t your mother inform you to never talk to strange boys? The information and trust you receive from people never ceases to amaze me. Nobody apart from a select few knew he was in the country, but now that select few included yours truly. He would be mine. Look out John Macher—get ready for a personal viewing of my silky cape and underpants, oh yes!
I was on a high, my fibs now knew no bounds. My next call was to the ever-helpful, overly posh Claridges Hotel, this time in a dodgy Dukes of Hazard American accent.
“Y’all have a friend of mine, John Macher, staying with you, and it’s his birthday this week. A few of his closest friends are going to surprise him in the morning, and I was wondering what his normal schedule was like there? You see, we wanted to arrange a champagne breakfast for him.
